Sean Maloughney: Time To Move on From Virtanen

Virtanen isn't a tough player, he's not very good, or smart.

I'm fine with releasing Virt but at the same time the preseason to date hasn't resolved any actual spots yet.

Benson, against an almost NHL team, sucked bad last night. He was the culprit of extremely bad positioning for the Weegar goal against. And really, even in the other 2 preseason games he played, wasn't exactly amazing.

Also, one of Janmark and Ryan do not need to be waived.

One of Foegele, Janmark, or Ryan need to be waived to be cap compliant is my understanding.

Im not sure why people are penciling in Foegele on the team when he hasnt shown much of anything himself so far this preseason.

The unfortunate truth is, with 5 more games to go and practices, Virt could well be on the roster and guys like Benson and Foegele in the AHL.

You keep Virtnanen for a couple more pre-season games. Helps fulfill the need to include a certain amount of vets in your pre-season lineup. If he doesn't show anything, release him.

Highly likely that they waive Ryan. Nobody will claim him. Outside chance someone would consider Janmark. Injuries happen so Ryan likely returns at some point.

If he’s the poops, let him go.

Galchenyuk was released because he is injured. The Av's have already said they would bring him back once healthy if he's interested at that point.

Foegle has a spot. He's a consistent 10-15-25 3rd liner who could slot up if needed. He's likely not going to go all-out in the preseason and risk injury, much like most established NHLers. I don't know if you don't like him because he's a bit overpaid or something, but Foegle is not an AHLer.

Nothing against Foegele. Like the player. But due to our cap restraints one of Foegele, Janmark, and Ryan HAS to be waived. Bottom 6 wingers are easy to replace and especially if he gets claimed it solves our cap problems.

If he has a worse camp than Ryan or Janmark he should be waived. Even if he doesn't he still should be waived because it makes the most sense from a cap perspective.
